Controversy: Its Positive Role in Education (pdf)

Kreitlow, a nationally recognized adult educator, suggests that Extension educators who aren't afraid to test their professional security and who see themselves as leaders and change agents involved in improving the quality of rural and urban life, frequently find themselves in the midst of controversy. He presents a change model that helps us see the alternatives for dealing with controversy in the educational environment and describes controversy as a naturally occuring phenomenon and as an input for rapid change. The model also identifies leadership characteristics for dealing with controversy or for using controversy as a means of bringing about change. The author sees controversy as a positive force and an effective tool for an educator.
Who Participates in Voluntary Action? (pdf)

Who would you say are the most active participants in voluntary action programs in your community? The authors examine the WHO portion of that question and present data indicating middle- or higher-income status individuals in the middle of their life cycle with adequate personal health, extensive informal interpersonal relationships, and who are exposed to mass media as those likely to join voluntary associations and action programs. Is this true in your community? Having this type of knowledge and information should give you clues on how you can more effectively reach and recruit more volunteers.

The author presents a systematic way of looking at the situations of people with whom we program to enable us to more effectively identify their needs. Using values as the basis for the framework, because "...our values give meaning, perspective, and importance to the needs, new technical ideas, or actions we experience," Forest identifies seven value-type cateories and proceeds to demonstrate how they can be used as a guide for program situation analysis. Perhaps you'll find his matrix model and suggestions for ways of using it helpful to you.

Seaman A. Knapp is recognized as the father of the County Demonstration Agent System and is known for his innovative way of helping people help themselves. The author, unhappy with current attempts in programming in 4-H in the inner cities, quotes from one of Knapp's speeches: "Your mission is to solve the problems of poverty, to increase the measure of happiness, and to harness the forces of all learning to the useful and needful in human society." Westwood raises the question of what Knapp would do were he alive today and faced the crises and dilemma we find in the inner cities.
