Extension Teach Ecology?
Dave Miller

Feature Articles

Experiments in Dialogue (pdf)
Ethel D. Kahn
Communication continues to be one of the most serious problems facing Extension people. Why aren't community agencies better able to work together? Why is there mistrust among agencies? The author reports on a three-day communication laboratory conducted by the Extension Service for representatives from various community agencies. Several sensitivity exercises were used to identify communication problems and strengthen interpersonal communication skills. Providing leadership for community dialogue may be one of the new roles for Extension.

MIE Assists Small Businessmen (pdf)
Kenneth E. Rindt
How can the extension professional be more effective in his work with small businessmen? Rindt suggests a Management Information Exchange as a tool. MIE is organized and operated at the community level and makes the expertise of some businessmen available to others who want and need it. "Small businessmen prefer getting help from other businessmen," Rindt says. And they prefer getting assistance on a personal, one-to-one basis. MIE can help the already too busy extension professional reach many small businessmen, and more effectively, too.

Developing New Junior Leaders (pdf)
Allen L. Ulrich
Junior leaders in 4-H need leadership education to be most effective. Ulrich describes a four-meeting seminar that has been adopted in several Ohio counties for first-year junior leaders. Topics such as: What Is Junior Leadership?, What Is Leadership?, Understanding and Teaching Younger Members, and Responsibilities in the Local Club are included in the series. Fourteen Ohio counties used the leadership education series in 1970 and reported an average increase of 11 percent in junior leader enrollment. Statewide increase was two percent in the same period.

Is Independent Study an Answer? (pdf)
Ralph C. Dobbs, Richard M. Markoff
Is independent study an extension method that will reach urban adults? Can independent study contribute to solving some problems of the urban crisis? The authors believe it can. They say independent study is appealing, has a liberal admission policy, and allows the adult to study at his own rate- and while he holds a full-time job. But to be effective, independent study must expand its curricula to include courses like criminology, theory and principles of community development, urban sociology, and Afro-American literature.

The Great Debate: On-Campus/Off-Campus Education (pdf)
Robert E. Clasen, Jack C. Ferver, John M. Gottman, Marjorie Putz
There has been a concern for years that extension credit courses offered off campus are inferior to those offered on the resident campuses. The authors compared off- and on-campus, graduate-level courses and found no differences in quality of students, professors, and the learning situation. This study suggests that off-campus courses may be different from on-campus courses, however.
