Is the Innovator Dead? (pdf)

Paul challenges the principle that all farmers in a community learn and adopt from a single innovator. Extension "...must get closer to the operating farmers as a whole." Successful farmers have no intention of sharing their information and techniques. What should Extension's role be when working with the less productive farmers: (1) to improve their efficiency or (2) to consider them as socioeconomic problems and handle them by trying to get them to move off the farms, by carrying them as a subsistance level, or by ignoring them?

Interview with Joseph C. Paige
Two years ago, Congressional legisation established the Federal City College in Washington, D.C. It's the only urban Land-Grant College and has been referred to as "an experiment in urban-oriented innovations in higher education." In this interview, Paige describes 4-H approaches with central city youth. Obtaining interest of black and brown youth in 4-H isn't a problem. "I've found youth extremely responsive to that which is relevant. And, as most of you will agree, they have a unique facility for turning off that which isn't."

Rethinking Public Policy Education (pdf)

Extension has dabbled in public policy education for many years. Yet, as Reeder says in this article, "Extension's confused about: (1) its public and (2) whether its policy message will be as narrow as community problems or as broad as world problems." He also raises questions about extension's one-way communication approach to public affairs education with little oppurtunity for feedback for people. Why are we always just concerned with the power structure in our public affairs education? Why don't we listen to the non-leaders, the powerless structure, Reeder asks?

Extension has been long on helping societal changes occur and short on helping people adjust to these changes according to Photiadis. He suggests that a new aim for Extension should be helping people adjust to societal change. In his words, "It's crucial for those who bring about change in the community, family, or the individual's style of life, to focus on what happens to the individual's internal world during the process of change." Extension agents should serve as "...a buffer for change so its impact will be controlled."

Are You Listening? (pdf)

Most of us spend about 45 per cent of our time listening. To be effective communicators, we must be effective listeners. We remember only half of what we hear immediately after listening. We can learn by listening; it gives us time to think; it can help solve problems; it can help us make better decisions and give us self-confidence; it can help us persuade others. With conscious practice of good listening habits, the time we spend listening can be productive and creative.
